Using video projection mapping into a giant translucent projection screen material and a massive 36 projector array of some of the biggest and brightest projectors on the planet, we braved wind and rain to create the largest projection mapped holographic display ever created.

“Inspired by the “bat signal”, we set out to create a “beacon in the sky” for the NFL with projection mapping!”, said Chris Lawes, CEO of Omnispace.

After two years of development and testing, sky projection was debuted at Super Bowl LIV. But when you see this new sky projection technology in action, you realize it is so much better than the bat signal ever was. Hovering over Hard Rock Stadium was a full display of motion graphics.

Utilizing the Omnispace Media Server technology, our team was able to map the display so that the projector array was perfectly aligned and calibrated to create a single holographic projection mapped image in the sky.

We were tasked primarily with two targets for projection mapping: 1) the iconic Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel and 2) the main entrance to the new Mercedes Benz Stadium. In both cases, we were focused on augmenting the existing imagery that was on the structures in the form of vinyl decals.

“In the case of the Westin Peachtree, we were working with some long throw distances and so we had to use very specific lensing and keystoning to achieve the desired image quality” said Nitai Flick, Omnispace CTO.

For the Westin Peachtree, we used a massive array of the ultra-bright and powerful Barco UDX 4K Laser 32K Lumen projectors with custom long-distance lensing. This was paired with the OMNISPACE360 Media Server Technology to both align and calibrate the projection mapping but also to deliver the content.

Our team worked directly with the NFL creative team to produce the artwork for the Westin building which included projecting effects onto the graphic of the Super Bowl LII logo and the famous Lombardi Trophy!

Projection Mapping the Mercedes Benz Stadium Entrance

On the side of the new Mercedes Benz Stadium that faces the rest of downtown Atlanta the NFL had our team projection map a giant Lombardi Trophy that we then animated to make it come alive with color and patterns.

While a bit more straight forward than projecting from the ground to a skyscraper, this project had a few new challenges. One was the ambient light that is always bathing the outside of the stadium in bright white lights. This required us to “stack” the projectors such that we effectively doubled the brightness to cut through that light. Another factor in this project was the need to adjust for the angle and geometry of the unique side of the stadium.

The Dome

Thanks to Omnispace’s state-of-the-art entertainment technology, our team was able to create a 50’ (15m) geodesic projection dome and offer any die-hard fan a VIP experience that they never expected! Our dedicated dome building team braved the extreme cold and what seemed like blizzard conditions to deliver this project for our client. Despite that, the dome and all the equipment took only a few days to build out prior to Super Bowl week kicking off!

The Show

For the immersive dome show that our team produced for the NFL, we started with the city of Minneapolis and zoomed up to the Hubble Space Telescope and back down into the U.S. Bank Stadium where Super Bowl LII was to be held. After a short demo of football plays on the field the scene changes to a beautiful winter forest that the audience is transported through on the dome very much like a ride film!

The experience was executive produced by Omnispace CEO, Chris Lawes who took a special interest in the success of the project. “Having worked in domes for many years, it was a unique opportunity to really show off the types of experiences that make immersive domes special. For example, the micro to macro of the city zooming out to space and back ended up really special and just would not be the same on a flat screen” said Chris.

In addition to the geodesic projection dome for the NFL, Omnispace 360 also produced video projection mapping displays onto buildings and the stadium in Minneapolis for the NFL featuring projected branding and effects leaving a lasting impression on the fans in attendance!

4D Immersive Dome Experience

Every year, hundreds of thousands of fans converge on San Diego’s beautiful bay front to experience comics, stories, and pop culture in person – one of the biggest draws is a sneak peek at upcoming shows. This year, we delivered a glimpse into the world of “Cosmos” via a 33’ / 10m geodesic projection dome with 4D Effects!

Experiential Solution

Due to the massive number of shows, books and movies that are featured at Comic-Con, it takes something special to really make a splash. When FOX and National Geographic were looking for an exciting and innovative way to showcase the new upcoming season of “Cosmos” called “Possible Worlds”, they called on our team of experiential marketing and immersive experience specialists. Here is what we delivered

• To start with, our team produced a custom exterior printed dome cover that featured the iconic “Cosmos” branding
• We custom fabricated an interior replica of the “Cosmos” ‘Ship of the Imagination’ from the show set
• Our team produced a 4 minute, 4K, 4D animation that featured a preview of the new season
• We built custom immersive screen which went all the way to the floor to maximize immersion
• We integrated 8 very bright and high-resolution video projectors using our proprietary Omnispace Media Server Technology feat. Automatic Calibration
• An additional projection display on the ceiling that gave the illusion of looking out a window while experiencing the show environments
• Finally we integrated 4D effects using bursts of air that blew at guests at certain points in the experience

Stellar Results

In the end, the Cosmos dome was a huge hit for FOX and National Geographic at Comic-Con, with more than 8,000 visitors seeing 80 shows per day!

Irving, Texas & Pebble Beach, California, USA – 2018: With AT&T and their agency’s aid, Omnispace produced a 50’(15m) geodesic projection dome in the heart of Irving, Texas for the Byron Nelson Classic PGA Tour event. The experience housed a wide assortment of different mediums of live dome streaming, interactive art and immersive displays for the PGA!

This is not your standard PGA sponsor tent with refreshments as you stroll around the course; this Immersive Dome has the power to take the golfing fan experience to the next level! A tech show, museum, arcade, and more wrapped up in an experience that anyone of any age will enjoy! 18 holes and 50 feet was the perfect formula to create one unbelievable tour stop down in Texas!

The Experience

First, the Omnispace team was tasked with pioneering a new technology and media solution to live dome stream from remote 360 cameras into a central dome location on the course. Our team was the first to ever deliver such an experience for a major sporting event. Then, using our OMNISPACE360 Media Server Technology, we were able to live switch between the dome streaming sources that were coming into the dome. We also integrated custom fulldome film programming that included a timeline for the career of golfing great Jordan Spieth.

We also were asked to bring the AT&T Fan Dome to the beautiful and iconic Pebble Beach Pro Am with its amazing location on cliffs along the shoreline in Carmel, California. The experience inside the dome was the same as in Texas but the production has a major difference in that we had to brave torrential rain and wind during the entire setup! However, we prevailed, and the event went according to plan and the guests were amazed. It was a credit to our partners and team at OMNISPACE360 and their professionalism that ensured a successful activation for our clients.

Multi-City Tour, Canada – 2017: Heineken wanted to create the ultimate immersive silent disco! They called on OMNISPACE360’s innovative team of programmers and technicians to produce the experience. Starting with the immersive dome which was an 8m / 24’ geodesic projection dome that was specifically designed for their tour of music festivals in Canada. Inside featured our 4k+ immersive media projection system but, instead of our usual immersive surround sound audio, we equipped our media server technology to deliver the silent disco audio to all of Heineken’s guests.

What powered the Marriott Super Bowl Dome?

Like all our geodesic projection domes, the Marriott Super Bowl Sleepover Dome featured the proprietary Omnispace Media Server System with Automatic Calibration. That allowed for rapid deployment of the dome in each market. It also allowed for the Marriott brand ambassadors to easily control the dome projections with an iPad and our proprietary dome player software.

Found deep in New York in early 2017, Omnispace collaborated with the Marriott’s creative team and agency to create an unforgettable experience that will keep sports fans talking and energized for years to come! Wake up in the future where you never have to leave your bed to get the best view of the stadium and everything included in our custom content production package for Super Bowl LII!

Omnispace took over the city that never sleeps and left an everlasting impression that is sure to become only bigger and better as time ticks forward; constantly matching the energy of even the most dedicated of team players like Rashad Jennings and Justin Tuck!

The activation was so successful that we then brought it to Minneapolis, MN for Super Bowl LII where fans were treated to the immersive dome experience the entire week prior to the big game! Just like NYC, the fans LOVED the dome experience with one fan saying:
